I don’t know. I’m guessing that the manufacturers will support it, because it isn’t going to cost them anything, but I also suspect that MPEG.LA will fight this for all they’re worth. After all, if everyone goes WebM, MPEG.LA doesn’t earn any money.

Thanks for the interesting article, Madhatter. I’m very excited about WebM and I graciously thank Google for liberating the VP8 codec. Now all I need is a nice HD camcorder that records WebM format (please tell me if you have any info on this). Also, YouTube has just removed the 15 minute video length limit, so http://youtube.com/ericfontainejazz will start to have entire performances up. Now all I need is an easy way to monetize my YouTube videos with bitcoin…I guess a bitcoin tipjar address will do the trick… At least some evil MPEG.LA patent trolls won’t be able to collect licensing fees anymore…
