Ubuntu – The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Canonical does some great stuff. While Ubuntu isn’t necessarily the most advanced operating system, it works, and works well. I happen to like Spaghetti Westerns. And I like Linux. So I thought I’d combine the two. And of course, me … Continue reading

The Alexis de Tocqueville Institution

From their current website: The Alexis de Tocqueville Institution core mission is supposedly studying the ideas and ideals of our namesake, Alexis de Tocqueville, on the extension and perfection of democracy. So why did The Alexis de Tocqueville Institution (ADTI … Continue reading

Steve Jobs Taking Medical Leave. Cheering Heard From Redmond

Apple doesn’t care about this. Apple’s a hardware company. As long as Apple is making a decent profit selling electronics, the company is happy. Microsoft on the other hand should be terrified. And not of Apple. Continue reading

My Prediction of ‘Nix Based System Usage Share For January 2012

Oh, this is going to be so much fun, because I don’t have one damned bit of proof. What I do have is a bunch of unconnected things, that when you look at them make it damned likely that Linux … Continue reading

The So-Called Death Of Desktop Linux

Back on October 17th, PC World published an article titled Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead, which started with the paragraph:

Despite phenomenal security and stability–and amazing strides in usability, performance, and compatibility–Linux simply isn’t catching on with desktop users. And if there ever was a chance for desktop Linux to succeed, that ship has long since sunk.

They followed up on October 19th with Reports of Linux’s Desktop Death Are Premature, which covered points such as the impossibility of measuring the market share off something that isn’t paid for at retail.

So where are we really? Continue reading

Server Operating System Market Share – Lies, Lies, And More Lies

Fascinating. She’s talking about the IDC Press Release, and she’s spouting off numbers that aren’t in it, as if no one will notice. And in fact a lot of people didn’t notice. A search using the url, conducted using both Google and Bing, shows that Mary Jane’s numbers have been uncritically (I checked a bunch of the articles, most repeat the numbers without questioning them) repeated all over cyberspace. Numbers that Mary Jane possibly invented, saw in a dream, or had given to her under the table by either IDC, Microsoft, or someone else who had access to the full report. Note that Mary Jane doesn’t state that she had access to the complete report, so my assumption is that she doesn’t.

Now when Joe Blow’s blog repeats the numbers, it doesn’t mean much. But when Wikipedia quotes them on the Usage share of operating systems entry, well, that’s another matter. A lot of people depend upon Wikipedia for information, but in this case Wikipedia is quoting data that has no provenance. It just appeared out of nowhere.

Mageia – A New Linux Distribution – Fork Of Mandriva/Mandrake

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Mandriva/Mandrake for a long time. It was always one of the best distributions. Period. But it was also one of the worst. The big problem with Mandriva, and Mandrake before was that it was … Continue reading

How Much Did Microsoft Pay HTC To Sign The Patent Licensing Agreement?

Now I don’t know that this is what happened, but from what I can see, it’s the only thing that makes sense with the patents that HTC holds. Microsoft pays HTC a lot of cash, so that HTC will pay Microsoft a small amount of cash per phone. Oh, there’s a bit of accounting work involved, but HTC comes out well ahead financially, and Microsoft can scream at everyone that HTC is paying it for using Android, and actually be telling the truth (the SEC gets upset if you don’t tell the truth). Continue reading
