Microsoft Death Watch – January 2011 Update
Back to the fun stuff. Like telling everyone that the most profitable company in the entire world will enter bankruptcy protection shortly. Just after the next Winter Olympics if I’m right. Yes I’m crazy. But I know what I’m talking … Continue reading
New ARM Chips Cause Internet Forum Wars – Could Hurt Intel Badly
Depending upon who you believe (and me being me, I believe nobody), Apple may be designing their own CPU, based on ARM technology. Apple has a job posting for a CPU designer on the Mac side of the business. Seriously. … Continue reading
Possible Future Tectonic Shifts In The Electronics Industry
First and foremost – Merry Christmas to all. Yes, it’s 6:00 AM on Christmas Day. I’m up, and my silly puppies are up (they woke me to let them outside about an hour ago). Since everyone else is in bed, … Continue reading
If Apple Releases An App Store For Windows, It Can Only Be To Kill Microsoft
PS: Note that I’ve mostly left Linux out of this article. Microsoft also has to kill Linux. Oh, and I’ve mostly left Solaris out of this article. Microsoft has to kill Solaris too. And BSD. And ReactOS. And Blackberry OS. And Symbian. To quote Ambassador Londo Mollari, played to perfection by Peter Jurasik in the Television Series Babylon 5:
Only an idiot would fight a war on two fronts. Only the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Idiots would fight a war on twelve fronts.
Have fun Microsoft. Continue reading
Microsoft Death Watch – Damage To The Ecosystem
Which makes me wonder how well the new Windows 7 phones are being supported with accessories? Not very well. A quick check on the website of a local Big Box retailer gives me a strong impression that the only accessories available for Windows 7 Phones are those that fit other phones (SD Cards, Bluetooth Headsets).
So what we have is a feedback loop. Since the last phone didn’t sell well, and the accessory makers got burned, they aren’t supporting the current phones, which means that sales of the current phones will suffer, because you can’t buy the accessories that you want. Continue reading
Microsoft Death Watch – Confirmation From Business Insider
I’ve caught a lot of flak for predicting Microsoft’s imminent demise. The average person looks at Microsoft’s current sales, and just can’t see why Microsoft can’t continue on forever, coining money. The problem is that things change. What Microsoft is doing today, that is bringing in good sales, may not be the right thing to do tomorrow.
And I’m not the only one who’s noticed this. Business Insider, has run a series of articles about Microsoft’s problems, dating back to December 16, 2007. Let’s take a look at them. Continue reading
The So-Called Death Of Desktop Linux
Back on October 17th, PC World published an article titled Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead, which started with the paragraph:
Despite phenomenal security and stability–and amazing strides in usability, performance, and compatibility–Linux simply isn’t catching on with desktop users. And if there ever was a chance for desktop Linux to succeed, that ship has long since sunk.
They followed up on October 19th with Reports of Linux’s Desktop Death Are Premature, which covered points such as the impossibility of measuring the market share off something that isn’t paid for at retail.
So where are we really? Continue reading
Server Operating System Market Share – Lies, Lies, And More Lies
Fascinating. She’s talking about the IDC Press Release, and she’s spouting off numbers that aren’t in it, as if no one will notice. And in fact a lot of people didn’t notice. A search using the url, conducted using both Google and Bing, shows that Mary Jane’s numbers have been uncritically (I checked a bunch of the articles, most repeat the numbers without questioning them) repeated all over cyberspace. Numbers that Mary Jane possibly invented, saw in a dream, or had given to her under the table by either IDC, Microsoft, or someone else who had access to the full report. Note that Mary Jane doesn’t state that she had access to the complete report, so my assumption is that she doesn’t.
Now when Joe Blow’s blog repeats the numbers, it doesn’t mean much. But when Wikipedia quotes them on the Usage share of operating systems entry, well, that’s another matter. A lot of people depend upon Wikipedia for information, but in this case Wikipedia is quoting data that has no provenance. It just appeared out of nowhere.

Microsoft Death Watch – Libre Office Drives Another Nail Into The Coffin
In the earlier articles in this series, Microsoft Death Watch and Microsoft Death Watch – Confirmation From Dave, one of the main points that I mentioned is that most of Microsoft’s profits come from what they call their ‘Microsoft Business Division.’ Microsoft Business Division includes several products, the most important of which is Microsoft Office. Continue reading
Microsoft Death Watch – The Mainstream Media Notices the Problem
Last year when I predicted that Microsoft had five years until they’d have to apply for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection, there was a lot of laughter. I was told that I was crazy – a point that I won’t argue. … Continue reading
